WHY Lifestyle Management?

The Present Indian Health Scenario

Rapid industrialization in developing countries has produced advancements on the social and economic front, resulting in economic prosperity and better living standards. These major economic and social changes in recent decades have brought a new brand of health problems – non-communicable diseases or lifestyle Diseases among the rich, the middle class and the poor. The modern eating habits, diets and lifestyle have exacerbated the incidence of abdominal obesity, insulin resistance, Type II diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease and Syndrome X in India.

The target oriented jobs, extended working hours, competition, lack of time etc are leading to severe stress and various life style related diseases in all urban cities in India.

In India in the past five decades, rates of coronary disease among urban populations have risen from 4 per cent to 11 per cent. The World Health Organization (who) estimates that 60 per cent of the world's cardiac patients will be Indian by 2010.
The rate of heart disease in India is catching up with more developed nations. It is shocking to note that around 2000 people are getting killed by stroke in India every day!. According to researchers, nearly 95 percent of people who developed a fatal cardiovascular disease had at least one of these major risk factors: high blood cholesterol, high blood pressure, smoking, diabetes besides a poor diet and overweight.

India is already number one in diabetes and every fourth Diabetic in the world is an Indian.

800,000 Indians are diagnosed with cancer every year and one out of 8 over the age of 40 is afflicted with Cancer.

The study done by CII-Mckinsey
“According to a CII-Mckinsey & Company countrywide study of 2002, infectious diseases will take a back seat and lifestyle diseases will form the major chunk of illnesses in India. With growing per capita income and new lifestyles, Indians will be spending more on treatment of lifestyle diseases. Lifestyle diseases like heart ailments, asthma, cancer, nervous and circulatory disorders, diabetes, hypertension and obesity are fairly widespread in the urban community.”
