The world to day is characterized by rapid change, accelerating technological developments and unprecedented industrial competitions. This necessarily requires more of each individual in the workforce and in all aspects of life – a great capacity for innovation and creativity, self development and personal responsibility. Hence the need for empowerment – specifically for a proven process for personal empowerment.

Most of us are going about the business of living with a huge void in our understanding of a very critical subject – ourselves. Without some insight, some understanding of who we are and why we think and act the way we do, we necessarily struggle and stumble about wondering if we are ever going to get it right.

STRESS - The Modern day affliction.
Stress has become a common part of today’s professional life, something few individuals can avoid.. Too much work, too little time, long working hours, job insecurity, low wages, a dominating boss and lack of recognition can all mean major stress on the job, which normally transfers into one’s personal life.

These harmful responses can ultimately lead to far-reaching costs on workers' well-being and corporate profits. If ignored, workplace stress can have a knock-on effect on personal relationships, and on the family. Workplace stress can lead to stress spilling over into all aspects of life. Some studies suggest that job stress may increase a person's risk for cardiovascular disease, psychological disorders, workplace injury and other health problems. Growing evidence suggests that high level of stress adversely affect physical health, psychological well being and many aspects of task performance. Such evidence makes a strong case for understanding and managing stress. Though it is difficult to eliminate work stress completely, attempts can be made to manage stress effectively and helping professionals in leading a healthy and successful life.

Our Thoughts and our Health
New knowledge, new skills, new perceptions keep our body and mind growing. We are the only creatures on earth who can change our biology by what we think and feel.

It is an established fact that the mind has an effect on the body and body has an effect on our mind. The human mind In fact runs the human body and most of the diseases, researchers say, originate in mind. So powerful are our thoughts and most of us are not aware of the intricacies of these thoughts and the happenings in our own mind.

Experts tell us that on an average a human being allows nearly 60,000 thoughts to run through his mind every day! And most of these thoughts are tired, impoverished thoughts that we think over and over again and most of them are negative. Thoughts carrying hostility, anger, frustration and bereavement are the highest scores when it comes to negative emotions. The basis of most cases of depression, which is the most important risk factors for both heart attacks and cancer, seems to be stress and frustration. The incidence of depression is much among the well-to-do and the educated than the poor according to the medical researchers.

What we have failed to understand is that the mind is the supreme part of the human body and it resides in every cell at the sub atomic level. A thought in the mind, if they are negative, encourages all kinds of diseases. At the same time if the mind is tranquil, the body would be healthy. This exactly is the holistic view of human health.

Most of us have born healthy. Nature has provided us with the wonderful autonomic nervous system and built in immune system which fights diseases, aid repair and healing. And all these get influenced and affected by our thoughts. Researchers confirm that we can change our body simply by changing our perceptions!

An estimated 6 trillion reactions are taking place in each cell of our body every second and our mind influences every cell of our body and we have more than 10 trillions cells in or body according to medical researchers. The amazing truth is that wherever a thought goes, a chemical goes with it.

‘Death rates from cancer and heart diseases are provably higher among people in psychological distress and lower among people who have strong sense of purpose and well being’, Dr Deepak Chopra MD says. This establishes what mentioned above.

Urban Life style & Diseases (NCD)

“A globalization of coronary heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and obesity is occurring throughout the world. While heart disease is declining in developed countries, it is rising dramatically in developing countries that are beginning to copy our diet and lifestyle.”
Dr Dean Ornish MD.

The Food, Lifestyle & Health.
The major economic and social changes in recent decades in India, have brought a new brand of health problems – non-communicable lifestyle diseases (NCD) among the rich, the middle class and the poor.
The type of food we consume, every one accepts, has a great effect on our health. In the recent years, due to the economic boom happening in our country we have been exposed to various kinds of convenient foods which have become handy for most of the busy working families. Many of these are called junk foods and loaded with calories, fats, artificial colors etc. These foods which are easily available in every street in our urban cities have become a fascination for children and elders alike.

These foods have greatly effected in the ‘size’ of modern Indians, adding more weight and fat all around their bodies. India now ranks among 10 most obese nations of the world. 120 million urban Indians are seriously obese. One out of 10 urban children is over weight and 33% of rise in heart diseases are mostly due to obesity.

The deaths from non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and injuries in India are projected to almost double, from about 4 million to about 8 million a year. Thus, India faces new challenges in this century in confronting NCDs and their onslaught. India’s urban population has increased more than threefold in the last 40 years to more than 250 million, and the United Nations projects that by 2025, 50 percent of Indians will live in urban areas, a breeding ground for NCDs and their lifestyle-related triggers.

WHO's 1997 annual report states: "Dramatic increases in life expectancy, combined with profound changes in lifestyle, will lead to global epidemics of cancer and other chronic disease in the next two decades. The main result will be a huge increase in human suffering and disability. There is an urgent need to find ways to reduce that coming burden."

“The world is facing a huge increase in suffering and disability from cancer, heart disease and other lifestyle illnesses in the next 25 years” the World Health Organization has warned.

Cancers are likely to double in most countries, with smoking, poor diet and an ageing population fuelling the rise.

The Indian Health Scenario
The recent surveys conducted by (1) ICRIER New Delhi and (2) NMHANS Bangalore carry shocking news and calls for every Indians attention.

1. “Indian Council For Research on International Economic Relations (ICRIER) in its study based on a survey of disparate companies across 15 states of India, showed 12% of blue-collar workers were at a high risk of getting a debilitating disease compared to 4% of the medium and senior-level employees.

While blue-collar workers are generally afflicted with acute as well as chronic infectious diseases like tuberculosis and AIDS, senior executives are more prone to lifestyle diseases, owing to lack of exercise and dietary control.
ICRIER's survey corroborates what Apollo Hospitals found in its study 'Health and Wellness Survey (2003)'. The study said more than half of the executives were prone to lifestyle diseases. And nearly 71% of the employees and 82% of CEOs were overweight. It had also found nearly 48% of the employees and 69% of CEOs were physically unfit.”

Heart diseases, strokes and diabetes cost India an estimated $9 billion in lost productivity in 2005. But the losses could grow to $200 billion over the next 10 years if corrective action is not taken quickly, a study by the Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations said. The outsourcing industry would be hardest hit, it warned.

2. The Survey conducted by the National Institute for Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS) and four other medical outfits on the world of Information Technology employees reveal-
a) 36% of Bangalore professionals are probably psychiatric cases
b) One among twenty employees regularly considers suicide
c) 28% constantly under strain
d) 300 of 900 men and women faced infertility problems.
e) 22% are unable to enjoy daily activities and a fifth that admit to being edgy and bad tempered all the time.
